Northants Open 21/05/2017

23rd May 2017

On Sunday 21st May the Mavericks Team had another successful tournament at the Northants Open.  The 6 students who competed came away with 7 GOLDS and 1 BRONZE,  gaining some fantastic experience at national level.

RYAN SMITH fought in the -145cm boys points and continuous categories. He had a slow start in his 1st points category, narrowly missing out on the win. In his continuous category he came back much stronger and improved through all 3 rounds, winning the final and taking GOLD by a good margin. In his 2nd points category he fought much better- narrowly missing out on the win, having fought brilliantly all day.

GIORGIO VISOLI fought in the -165cm boys and was easily the smallest/lightest fighting in his category. In points he fought brilliantly against a taller opponent just missing out in a very close Sudden Death final. In continuous he was up against the winner of his points category who again was much taller and heavier and showed greater skill in taking the lead in the first half of the match. He eventually came away with a well earned BRONZE in his light continuous category.

NAVNEET SIHRA fighting in the novice -75kg continuous lost narrowly in the 1st round to the eventual finalist. In his points category he really stepped up his game, taking his 2nd competition GOLD and really starting to show potential.

IULIAN PREDA fighting in the same category comfortably won all of his fights to take his 1st National Tournament GOLD in continuous. Unfortunately due to the hectic nature of these events he missed out on competing in his points category but judging by his previous fights he would have been a formidable opponent.

ANNABEL JEFFERIES- although still a novice she wanted to step up her game and fight in the intermediate category and showed again how much improvement she is making by easily taking GOLD in both her points and continuous categories.

LIZZIE BELL fought in 3 categories on Sunday- in her first open weight match she lost out unfortunately in the 1st round. In continuous it was a straight final and Lizzie showed great determination against a much bigger opponent and came away with GOLD. In her points fight she was matched against the same opponent from her open weight category. She upped her game and started strong in the first round which finished even 5-5. With a quick adjustment in tactics for the next round, she stepped up a level, landed some great shots and took her second GOLD of the day!

All the students had a fantastic day and gained great experience from the competition, coming home with a few more trophies to add to their collections. Mavericks is becoming a force to be reckoned with at competition level and we are so proud of our students for stepping up and showing what Mavericks can do. Massive congratulations to all the guys who competed and on to the next one!
